How big should a throw be?

In the US a throw is usually 50 x 60 in (127 x 152 cm). That covers one adult from shoulders to feet when you sit with your legs tucked up, and it folds neatly over a sofa arm. If you like to stretch out and lie down under a throw, or you share the sofa with someone, go up to 59 x 79 in (150 x 200 cm), which is close to the 60 x 80 in size sold as an oversized throw.

Smaller throws earn their place too. A 39 x 59 in (100 x 150 cm) throw is the right size for the back of an armchair, a reading corner or a lap at the desk, and it's light enough to carry from room to room.

To see what a size looks like on your own couch, open a bath towel or a bed sheet, fold it to the size you have in mind and drape it where the throw will live.

Faux fur or cotton gauze?

Faux fur is the warm choice. A deep polyester pile holds warm air close to you, so a faux fur throw feels much warmer than a fleece of the same size. Ours come with a ribbed or a wavy striped texture, which gives the throw body and lets it fall in heavy folds over the arm of the sofa. They suit fall and winter, cool rooms and anyone who's always cold.

Cotton gauze is the light choice. Several layers of open-weave cotton are stitched together into one throw, so air moves through it while it still takes the chill off. That makes it a good fit for summer evenings, air-conditioned rooms, hot sleepers and anyone who finds a fleece throw too much. Gauze has a natural crinkle, so there's no ironing, and cotton gauze gets softer the more you wash it.

If you only buy one throw, think about when you'll use it most. For the colder half of the year, pick faux fur. For warm rooms and year-round use, pick cotton gauze.

Picking a color

A throw is the easiest way to add color to a living room without changing anything else. On a gray or white sofa, warm tones like Caramel, Rust, Coral or Butter Yellow stand out. On a brown or leather sofa, cooler colors like Sage Green, Dusty Blue or Silver Gray look fresh. If you'd rather the throw blends in, choose a shade a step lighter or darker than the sofa itself. Pet owners often pick a color close to their pet's coat, since loose hair shows less.

Washing and care

Every throw here can go in the washing machine. Wash it cold on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent, and wash it on its own the first time. Skip fabric softener on faux fur, since it flattens the pile. Tumble dry on low or hang it to dry, then give faux fur a good shake to lift the pile again. Like most cotton, gauze can shrink a little in a hot wash or a hot dryer, so keep it cool. The exact care for each throw is on its page.

Delivery and returns

Throws arrive in 7 to 16 days. Delivery is $6.95, free on orders from $49, and you have 30 days to change your mind. Send a throw back unwashed and it's refunded once it reaches us.

Questions

What size throw blanket is best for a couch?

For one person, a throw close to 50 x 60 in (127 x 152 cm) is the classic choice; the 51 x 59 in (130 x 150 cm) and 51 x 61 in (130 x 155 cm) sizes here are right there. If you lie down on the sofa or share it, choose 59 x 79 in (150 x 200 cm).

Which is warmer, faux fur or cotton gauze?

Faux fur is much warmer. Its deep pile holds warm air close, so it's the throw for cold evenings and cool rooms. Cotton gauze is light and breathable, so it suits warm rooms, summer and anyone who sleeps hot.

Can I put a throw blanket in the washing machine?

Yes, every throw here is machine washable. Wash it cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, tumble dry on low or hang it to dry, and skip fabric softener on faux fur so the pile stays soft.

Do faux fur throws shed?

A new faux fur throw can drop a few loose fibers in the first wash or two, then it settles down. Washing it on its own the first time keeps those fibers off the rest of your laundry.

Will a cotton gauze throw shrink?

Like most cotton, gauze can shrink a little, mostly in a hot wash or a hot dryer. Wash it cold and dry it on low or on the line, and it stays close to its size.
