How to put on and wash a stretch sofa cover

Three steps to fit it and a gentle wash when it needs one. Here's how to keep it looking right.

1. Start at the back label

Put the labeled side over the back of the sofa, then stretch the cover evenly over both arms and line up the seams.

2. Tuck in the foam sticks

If your cover comes with foam sticks, push them into the gaps between the seat and the frame. They hold the cover in place.

3. Fit sectionals one section at a time

Some sectional covers fit one section each, so an L-shaped sofa takes 2 covers. Fit each one the same way, starting at the back.

Washing

Machine wash on a gentle cycle with similar colors, at 86°F (30°C) or cold, as the care line says. Close any fastenings first and skip the bleach. Some covers can tumble dry low; others need to line or air dry. Refit the cover only when it's completely dry.

Spills and pets

Most stretch covers are washable, not waterproof or scratch-proof. Blot spills quickly and keep claws trimmed, or choose a cover marked waterproof on its product page.

Screens vary. Compare the fabric close-up with the room photos on the product page, and ask us if you're unsure between two colors.

Checking your sofa measurements

Before fitting a cover, measure the width across your sofa from the outer edge of one arm to the other. Sizes depend on the cover: The Printed Jacquard Stretch Couch Cover, for example, comes as a single seat for 30-55 in, a 2 seater for 55-73 in, a 3 seater for 73-90 in and a 4 seater for 90-118 in. Read our how to measure your sofa guide to confirm your size.

If your width falls directly between two sizes, choose the larger option. The extra fabric tucks securely into the side and back gaps. For single chairs, our stretch armchair covers include club and barrel chair covers for chairs 27.6-31.5 in wide, plus covers for tub and wingback chairs. Recliners take a recliner cover, and furniture with exposed wooden arms will not fit these shapes.

Fitting straight and sectional seating

When fitting stretch sofa covers, line the fabric up neatly with the contours of the padded arms before you push any foam sticks into the seat crevices.

For L-shaped seating, sectional couch covers are sold by section or by chaise side. The Basketweave Stretch Sectional Sofa Cover comes in 5 sizes from 35 to 142 in wide, and The Printed Stretch Sectional Sofa Cover fits one section per cover, so an L-shaped sofa needs 2. To choose the right side, face the furniture from the front: if the chaise sits on your left, order a left chaise; if it sits on your right, order a right chaise.

Washing and fabric care routines

Most of our stretch covers machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle; The Leaf Jacquard Stretch Sofa Cover takes a cold gentle wash with no softener. Wash with similar colors and close all fastenings before you start. Do not use bleach.

After washing, follow the care line on the product page: The Printed Jacquard Stretch Couch Cover can tumble dry low, while The Basketweave Stretch Sectional Sofa Cover and The Smooth Stretch Club Chair Cover line or air dry. The cover should be completely dry before you put it back on the sofa. Most stretch covers are not waterproof or scratch-proof, so blot any spills immediately and keep pet claws trimmed.

Texture options and order details

When selecting a style, compare textures like printed jacquard, basketweave, raised leaf jacquard and ribbed knit, or view the comparison guide on which stretch sofa cover you should buy. Colors depend on the cover, from 19 prints on The Printed Jacquard Stretch Couch Cover to Charcoal, Mocha and Camel on The Leaf Jacquard Stretch Sofa Cover.

Questions

How do I wash it?

Machine wash on a gentle cycle with similar colors, at 86°F (30°C) or cold, as the care line on the product page says. Some covers can tumble dry low, others line or air dry. Refit it only when it's fully dry, and don't use bleach.

Is it waterproof or pet-proof?

Most of our stretch covers are not: they're washable layers for everyday life, not a barrier against spills or sharp claws. For spills, choose a cover marked waterproof, such as The Waterproof L-Shape Sectional Cover, and see our dog couch covers for pets. Blot spills quickly and keep claws trimmed.
