A dog on the sofa is a happy dog, until the fur, muddy paws and claw marks start to show. These 9 covers lie over the seat, hold their place on a non-slip backing and go straight in the washing machine, in chenille, quilted plush, velvet and a water-resistant quilted protector.

Most of the covers here are flat, rectangular mats that lie over the seat of the sofa. The short side runs from the back of the seat to the front, with a few inches tucked down at the back and the rest falling over the front edge, where a dog's front paws land as it climbs up. The long side runs from one arm to the other. The underside has a non-slip backing, rubber dots or a grippy finish, so the cover stays put when a dog turns around three times before lying down.
Because each piece is separate, you can cover only the seat your dog uses, or put together a whole sofa: one long piece across the seat, another over the back cushions and smaller pieces over the arms.
The Water-Resistant Sofa Protector works differently. It's one quilted piece that covers the seat, the back and both arms, held in place with an elastic strap. If you'd rather cover everything at once, that's the one to look at.
Measure two things. First, the depth of your seat from the back cushions to the front edge. Add about 6 in (15 cm) so the cover tucks in at the back and drapes over the front, and choose the cover width closest to that number: 28 in (70 cm) suits most seats, 35 in (90 cm) suits deep seats, and 43 in (110 cm) suits very deep seats or a seat plus its back cushion.
Second, measure the width of the seat from arm to arm. Choose the cover length closest to that number. A cover a few inches shorter leaves a little seat showing at the ends; a cover a few inches longer tucks into the arms.
Chenille is woven from soft, tufted yarn into a tight, textured surface. Claws snag less on it than on loose weaves, and fur brushes off easily. It's hard-wearing and looks like upholstery, so it suits sofas you want to keep looking smart.
Quilted plush is soft and lightly padded, so it's comfortable for a dog to lie on and adds a layer between paws and upholstery.
Velvet flannel is the warmest and softest. Fur sits on top of the short pile, where a lint roller or a rubber glove lifts it off.
The water-resistant quilted protector has a face that sheds most spills if you wipe them up quickly. It's the choice for older dogs, puppies in training and muddy walks.
Every cover here goes in the washing machine. Shake it outside or run a lint roller over it first to get rid of loose fur, then wash it cold on a gentle cycle. Skip bleach and fabric softener, which can wear down the non-slip backing. Hang it to dry or tumble dry on low. The exact care for each cover is on its page.
Covers arrive in 7 to 24 days. Delivery is $6.95, free on orders from $49, and you have 30 days to send a cover back unwashed if the size or color isn't right.
| Your seat | Seat width, arm to arm | Cover size to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Armchair | 20 to 28 in (50 to 70 cm) | 28 x 28 in or 28 x 35 in |
| Loveseat | 40 to 50 in (100 to 125 cm) | 28 x 47 in, or 35 x 47 in for a deep seat |
| Compact 3-seat sofa | 55 to 60 in (140 to 150 cm) | 28 x 59 in |
| Standard 3-seat sofa | 65 to 72 in (165 to 180 cm) | 28 x 71 in, or 35 x 71 in for a deep seat |
| Long sofa | 78 to 84 in (200 to 215 cm) | 28 x 83 in, or 35 x 83 in for a deep seat |
| Chaise | 24 to 35 in (60 to 90 cm) wide, 55 to 63 in (140 to 160 cm) long | 35 x 63 in or 43 x 63 in |
Choose a cover with a non-slip backing, which every cover here has, and tuck the back edge down between the seat and the back cushions. A size that drapes over the front edge also helps, since the overhang holds the cover in place.
Measure your seat's depth and add about 6 in (15 cm), then measure its width from arm to arm. Choose the cover width closest to the first number and the length closest to the second. A standard 3-seat sofa usually takes 28 x 71 in (70 x 180 cm).
Chenille and velvet flannel are the easiest to keep clean. Fur sits on the surface instead of weaving in, so a lint roller, a rubber glove or a quick shake outside takes most of it off.
Yes. Remove loose fur first, then wash cold on a gentle cycle without bleach or fabric softener. Hang the cover to dry or tumble dry on low to keep the non-slip backing in good shape.
The Water-Resistant Sofa Protector sheds most spills if you wipe them up quickly. The chenille, quilted plush and velvet covers are not water-resistant, so a big spill can soak through to the sofa.
