The Quilted Diamond Dining Chair Seat Cover

What this seat cover is

This is a single stretch cover made for the seat of a dining chair. You pull it over the cushion, and the fabric hugs the shape of the seat for a neat, fitted look. The face has a soft quilted diamond-stitch texture, so it feels cushioned underhand rather than flat. A spilled drink or a dropped spoon stays on the surface long enough for you to wipe it up instead of soaking into the chair.

The fabric is a stretch polyester and spandex blend at about 180 gsm. That weight gives it enough body to sit smoothly over a cushion without looking thin, while the spandex lets it stretch to fit. It works on upholstered dining chairs, and it is a simple way to refresh a chair whose seat has faded, stained or worn.

Sizes and fit

One cover fits one chair seat. The stretch fabric is made to fit dining chair seats up to 18 x 18 in (45 x 45 cm).

Measure the seat of your chair before you order. Measure the width and the depth of the cushion at its widest points, and check that both come in at or under 18 x 18 in (45 x 45 cm). If your seat is smaller, the stretch fabric takes up the slack. If your chair has a very thick cushion or wide arms that meet the seat, the cover may not pull down as cleanly.

How to put it on

Start with the chair seat clean and dry. Slip the cover over the front edge of the cushion first, then pull it back toward the rear and work it down over the sides. Smooth the quilted face with your hands as you go, pressing out any bunching at the corners. Tuck the edges under the seat where you can, so the cover grips and does not slide when someone sits down.

To take it off, lift the front edge and roll the cover back off the cushion. Because the fabric stretches, you do not need to force it. Once it is on, it stays in place for normal meals, and it comes off in seconds when you want to wash it or change the color for a season.

Care and washing

Machine wash at 30°C (86°F) on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry low. Do not bleach and do not iron. Wash covers of different colors separately the first time, and turn them inside out if you want to protect the quilted face. A gentle cycle and low heat keep the stretch and the quilted texture in good shape, so skip hot water and a hot dryer.

For everyday upkeep, wipe small spills with a damp cloth before they set. A quick shake outdoors between washes keeps the quilted texture fresh. If you keep two sets, one can be on the chairs while the other is in the wash, which is handy around holidays and big meals.
