The Smooth Stretch Cushion Cover

A smooth knit in 22 colors

This cover is a plain stretch knit with a soft matte finish and no pattern, so from across the room it reads like the couch's own upholstery. It has more give than a jacquard, which makes it the easiest of our covers to fit over rounded cushion edges. The polyester knit feels cool and smooth to sit on, and an elastic edge pulls it closed underneath the cushion.

With 22 colors it's the one to choose when you want to match a rug, a wall or another piece of furniture. Light colors such as White, Pale Beige and Cream brighten a dark couch. Deep shades such as Navy, Forest Green and Burgundy hide wear and give a tired couch a richer look.

Which size fits your cushion

Measure the cushion, not the couch: the length across the front, the depth from front to back and the height. Standard sizes fit cushions 18 to 24 in (45 to 60 cm) deep and the Deep sizes fit cushions 24 to 33 in (60 to 85 cm) deep. All sizes take cushions 2 to 8 in (5 to 20 cm) tall.

The chart in the photos calls the deep sizes Plus. Because this knit stretches so far, a cushion near the top of a range still fits smoothly, while a cushion at the very bottom of a range can leave a few soft wrinkles. If you're between two sizes, the smaller one usually gives the neater fit.

Colors

The full range is White, Pale Beige, Cream, Camel, Chocolate, Smoke Gray, Gray, Dark Gray, Black, Slate Blue, Aqua, Royal Blue, Navy, Forest Green, Sunflower, Orange, Light Pink, Fuchsia, Lilac, Purple, Wine Red and Burgundy. Every color is photographed on the same couch in daylight, so you can compare shades side by side. A smooth fabric shows its true color more evenly than a textured weave, and it looks a little warmer under lamp light.

Putting it on

Turn the cover so the elastic faces you, hook it over the two front corners, then stretch it around the back and let it close under the cushion. Run your hand from the center outward to remove ripples. A smooth knit shows the shape of the cushion beneath it, so plump the filling before you fit the cover.

Care

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, without bleach or fabric softener, and hang to dry. Keep it out of the dryer and away from a hot iron, which can loosen the stretch over time.
